Published by Schirmer/Mosel in Munich in 1989, this is the inaugural volume of the Edition Heiner Bastian series. The book documents Cy Twombly's 24 Short Pieces, a 1973 cycle of twenty-four drawings plus a title sheet, made in house paint, crayon, and pencil on paper. Each sheet measures roughly 23.5 by 25 cm. The drawings sit between landscape, language, and inscription, made during the years Twombly was moving between Rome, Bassano in Teverina, and the Italian coast.
The volume is edited and written by Heiner Bastian, the German collector, curator, and longtime Twombly interlocutor responsible for much of the artist's European framing in the 1980s and 1990s. Bastian's text reads the cycle through the figure of the written line, drawing connections to Ezra Pound and to the structure of the Odyssey. Sixty-two pages, hardcover with the original printed jacket, fully illustrated in colour. Text in German and English. Designed and produced to Schirmer/Mosel's standard of the period, with the heavy paper stock and tight gravure-style reproduction that defines their Twombly editions.
Sourced for M.I.G. by Paris Image Unlimited as part of a thirty-three-title curation of rare art, photography, and design books. A reference work for anyone tracking Twombly's drawing practice, the Edition Heiner Bastian project, or the postwar German art-book publishing tradition.
